We are talking about locally sourced, fresh everyday, and so, so delicious!

First up, I was asked to photograph Martha's Leelanau Table

(Full disclosure, I love eating here, and I have photographed their location before, lucky me!)

Manitou Magaizine is created by the Sleeping Bear Dunes visitor Bureau.

You may or may not know that Sleeping Bear Dunes was voted the most beautiful place in America!

The new issue of Edible Grande Traverse is out!

Do you know how good a pie maker Barb Tholin (The Editor) is?!

Every time I am lucky enough to be asked over to shoot she has a pie going..man, are they gorgeous and of course delicious.

This is a Sour Cream Blueberry Pie. The recipe is in the magazine. Please check it out.

And this lovely book is by Dela Lutes. Charlie Wunsch has written an insightful article on how Dela still inspires cooks today.

But this post really features the oats that are throughout the new issue of EGT.

So, do you know what it is?

Barb created Scottish Cranachan, a traditional celebration of harvest! You knew that, right?

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/2 pound of raspberries

2 cups whipping cream

2 tablespoons of honey

2 tablespoons of whiskey

How to put them all together is in the magazine.

Barb also gets a little sci-ency telling about oats...some good info on how they are so beneficial for us in there. Me, I just think they taste great!

Finally,

I'll leave you with this last photo.. Oats cooked until stiff so that you can build with them!

Details That Are Personal on Your Day

These photos are from a wedding that took place at Watervale Inn. It was my first trip there (I want to go back!). It's a national historic site, it's a resort, has a dune called Mt. Baldy, and tons of charm.

I was assisting Brian Confer, of Studio B Photography , a fantastic photographer from whom I learned much this summer.

On to the couple... Ales& Kelly Jo, two world travelers who found each other and fell in love...The photos show you that for sure, but I was blown away when Brian shared that almost all the decorations had been made by Kelly Jo!
These little touches reflect her and Ales's travel and style.

They most certainly took some time but I think you will agree they were worth it.
I want to give the bottle and stamps a try .

American Spoon is Local !

Today we hear a lot about buying local and sustaining our communities farmer's and artisans. It's a simple choice that has a lifetime effect.

According to the MLUI, if we just spend $10.00 dollars a week on local farm foods, our regional economy will grow by 5 million a year!

That is why I was so pleased to be asked to submit photos to Edible Grande Traverse Magazine utilizing the delicious products of American Spoon.

American Spoon got it's start here in Northern Michigan over 30 years ago. They use local farmers and pay them more to keep growing the types of fruit American Spoon specializes with.

You can read all about them in a wonderful article written by Tamara Stevens for Edible Grande Traverse Holiday Issue.

As for me, it was a chance to sample their amazing products. A very tasty photo shoot indeed! Have any of you had their products?

New Year, New You?

So, the New Year is now a few weeks old and I'm wondering how everyone is doing?

I will tell you right away that every year I neglect to make a declaration on what I might change in my life.
I decided this year would be different. I'm not too cool to join the rest of the world. I will take stock and see if anything can be done...
So, like many of you readers, I looked at my finances and my weight. I'll leave the finances for another time, but the the pounds must be addressed! As somewhat of a foodie, (self-proclaimed) I have been keeping on top of what I eat, reading more thoroughly what works for my metabolism, and not beating myself up when I make a poor choice..but I also get really hungry watching my food network and photographing food!

That's why, when I saw how much a lemon in your water can help on Yahoo, I thought I would give it a try.
Course, I added some fresh, red currants too.
This foodie thinks it's delicious! Water never tasted so good.

Being Second is a lot of fun!

This past summer, I took on quite a few second shooting, and assisting jobs.
I really strive to learn from each photographer that I work with.
Sometimes being second is not our ideal, but when you are helping out an outstanding photographer, like Brian Confer, being second is a lot of fun and very rewarding.

My job, as a second photographer, mainly focuses on photographing the groom getting ready, the important details, and helping to capture candid moments that might be missed. Really, I try to shoot like it is my own wedding client.

This was a lovely wedding at the Grand Traverse Resort. Thank you again Brian!

Chef Piombo and Nonna's at the Homestead Resort

One of my favorite assignments is going to a restaurant to meet the Chef.

Early this November, my editors sent me an advance copy of the article for an upcoming issue of Grand Traverse Magazine and said, "Have at it!"

Chef John Piombo was to be featured. He is the Chef at Nonna's at the Homestead in Glenn Arbor, Mi.

While Chef described his love of football, Dean Martin, and his family, he started to create.

He started the session with a quick batch of homemade fresh bread and focaccia. Yum!

While things cooked away, I spent some time photographing the beautiful interior of Nonna's.

Nonna's is really beautiful!

Caleb, a member of the staff, got the fireplace going for me.

The staff always sits down to a meal together before service..The lady on the far left (baseball hat) created a spicy fish and rice dish that was perfection!

Food for Thought

Boy, they aren't kidding when they say enchanted...this preserve is so delicious my daughter and I were eating it right from the jar!

Over the years, I have gotten to know the folks at Food for Thought, Timothy and Kathy Young are truly pillars in the community.They help to build awareness of organic goodness,volunteering, and sustainability and their products are amazing!

Taryn & Russell

I have some amazing clients for next year and Taryn and Russell are no exception!

Taryn and Russell first met when Taryn literally fell into his life, and he caught her.

After a good laugh, they got to know each other, and have been inseparable ever since.

So check this out, Russel is a big fan of the Packers and Taryn loves the Lions. In the photos she made him wear a lions jersey!!...he most certainly adores her!

In honor of the two teams playing today I give you the lovely Taryn and Russell!

With the season slowing just a bit I have had a little time to organize my house a little. (just a little) and I came across an old sketch book of mine from college.

Let's just say that sketching was, well, not my thing... but it did inspire me to be more creative with my photography now and back then.

Seeing all those lines and colors squiggled on the pages, made mewante to try and show what I really see.

The best way for me to do that is with the camera.

(Trust me...lol)

Daniel 2012

Daniel has been a part of my life almost every day for 7 years.

Mornings at 7:30am he would arrive to ride with the family to school. He fit right in with my kids; Learned to argue and goof around on the 28 mile drive just like them!

This year things changed. Daniel is about to graduate. I am so excited for him, but now he drives himself.

No more Mondays riding up front (the kids rotate who gets the front seat) and no more country music on his day. (Phew! lol Just kidding.)

Thankfully his Mom asked me to take Daniel's senior photos.

We kept it local and headed to the bridge. Turkey gnats and poison ivy couldn't stop us.

Before we captured some cool car shots Daniel gave his Dad a big squeeze. Priceless!

Kathy and Tim, your son is wonderful! You have done a great job.

Thank you for having Daniel be a part of our family :)

I can't wait to see what you do next Daniel!

The Kids Are Alright

So it's Fall in Northern, Mi. Since I first got my driver's license many moons ago I have driven backroads in the Fall and photographed.This tradition has been carried on with my children since they were little. This year we did not have time (and the girls thought it was soooo boring) to visit any old cemeteries but we did get in a trip for group photos.

Normally photo-shoots with my children have at least two meltdowns (I'm not telling on who's part..lol) and some threats thrown in for good measure. While I would like to tell you Dear Reader that this time was different, I can't, but it did go better than most! I think the promise of donuts and cider while in transport helped.

Hopefully the kiddos will remember these adventures with fondness as I do even with all the challenges. Happy Fall!

Emily and Nigel 9-10-11

In August of 2010 Emily and Nigel were married. A small intimate ceremony on a dock took place in Sutton's Bay . A few close friends and family were in attendance.

Emily said it was beautiful!

Mr and Mrs. Griswold began their family and along came little Ila.

Emily and Nigel had talked about having a big wedding before and were encouraged to do have one by her Dad.

He kept asking them about it and they said they probably couldn't justify it,but Dad insisted that they could, and that's how I was able to be a photographer at my amazing friends wedding!

Emily, Nigel, family and friends all stayed at The Fountain Point Resort in Lake Leelanau, Mi.

The wedding and reception both took place there. It was great to have such a beautiful place to photograph in.

Emily was so excited to start :)

The Flowers were amazing! Emily's bridesmaid Bridget (Bridget's Botanicals) made all of them!

Cyerra is on her Way!

Clinch Park in Traverse City was the setting. A few days before we had tried to for Cyerra's session but the rain was just too heavy. I'm glad we went with the back up date because as you will see it was perfect.

Cyerra was pretty comfortable and fell right into having fun with the shoot.

I found out that this lovely girl is ready to graduate and start a new chapter. She's got so much ahead of her!

You can do whatever you put your mind to Girl.

Emily and Nigel's First Look

Emily teared up before she rounded the corner of the cottage..Nigel was waiting in the woods. I could hear Emily catch her breath as she saw Nigel.

She rushed across the grass to his arms...

As she wiped the tears of joy and excitement away Nigel turned her to see the whole dress..to appreciate her fineness!

These two are truly in love and I can't wait to share their fantastic day with you.

She is!

Wonderful, smart, lovely girl is going to graduate this year!

Now, she did not really want senior pictures but I dragged her out anyway. I drove for about an hour, through dark storm clouds and rain..she almost got her wish, but thankfully it cleared up the further we went.

It was quite the experience and think the results speak for themselves.

I just can't help gushing as this is my oldest child but truly,
my daughter Sarah impresses me every day with her intelligence and great attitude.
I can't wait to see what adventures she will go after next.

Tyler Class of 2012

Every time I take photos of a graduating senior, I think back to how much fun I had when I got mine done. I got to be in the limelight and told that I was beautiful..it was a blast!

Now, Tyler probably did not want to hear that he was beautiful, but he sure did Rock out the photos!

Being a football player at Traverse City West requires a lot of dedication and Tyler really brings it.. We made the shoot happen in the a.m. even with practice happening every day.

Momma Lee, thank you so much for having me photograph your boys over the years.All 3 are great men.

Tyler, I hope you had fun and liked being the center of attention.

Kaycie is graduating!

You know, and I know, that Time just won't slow down. I was reminded of this when I got the call to photograph Kaycie for her Senior pictures. She and my oldest daughter have gone to school together since I think second grade!
I've watched Kaycie grow into a gorgeous woman (still lots of little Kaycie still in there) and I am excited for her as she wants to become a veternarian.
Kaycie knew she wanted a 40's sepia look to some of her photos. I hope she likes them as much as I do!

Missy & Calvin a day of rain and kisses

Over the years I have been able to meet many interesting and fun people through my photography.

Missy is an incredible woman who I met while volunteering with United Way. She was the coordinator for the Day of Caring event that I was asked to help photograph. After volunteering for her we became friends. She is just so upbeat and fun!

I was sad when she decided to move down to Blanchard, Mi. However, knowing that she was able to spend more time with her fiance` Calvin, and that she was ready to start her new country life, made it a happier going away.

When I met Calvin I instantly felt that he would be a wonderful husband to my friend.

The day became a little tense with unexpected rain but Missy made it fabulous even without a plan B.

Thank you Missy and Calvin for letting me be a part of your special day. Congratulations and keep those kisses going!

30 Project

I don't know if you know this but this past fall I got fat!
No, really..I was stress eating like crazy and not making time for good food consequences be damned. I could give you quite a few good reasons why I went down this path but ultimately I just didn't want to take care of myself.
However, after a few important wake up calls I have started making changes . Physically and mentally I feel so much better!

One of the things that got me thinking about why I should care again was the fantastic meeting of local minds at the 30 project dinner.
"The 30 Project is bringing people to the table:
Fighting hunger and obesity, improving agriculture and access to healthy foods, and working on change in the food system."

I got a call at about 9 am asking if I would like to photograph/document the meal . I would only have a few hours to get out to Traverse City and get started. I jumped at the opportunity :)

Meeting Ellen Gustafson, who had just spoken at the TC Tedx the day before was literally energizing. Her enthusiasm for the 30project was infectious. I was excited to see old friends from both Trattoria Stella's who were hosting the event and Chef Eric and Chef Jen from the Cook's House who came to share a few dishes.

Everyone was asked to share how they impact the local food scene and what changes they think would help with improving our food systems. I found it very inspiring to hear from non profits, chefs, magazines, and just about everyone who has a interest in local agriculture speak up.

This one dinner helped me make changes. I hope the other dinners that the 30 project has will continue to have an impact on others.

Martha's Leelanau Table

What a privilege it was when I was able to visit Martha's Leelanau Table in Sutton's bay.
The restaurant is in a lovely old house with a gorgeous new outdoor patio and garden (which they utilize in their cooking).
I was there to take photos for EGT.
However, I had been there before for their amazing breakfast sandwich..all local and all delicious!

I'll let the photos make your mouth drool but the actual taste is even better. You should go and visit.Have the famous Martha's Salad or the divine Turkey Club with Jalapeno Mayo (both pictured below) and tell Martha I said, "Hello." :)

Grocer's Daughter Chocolates

On June 4th I traveled to Grocer's Daughter Chocolates in Empire, Mi. I was on assignment for Edible Grande Traverse Magazine.

I had already had the pleasure of trying Grocers Daughter Chocolates before, but now I was at the source!

Mimi Wheeler, the owner and chocolate maker, was very gracious in posing for me and helping me set up the photo shoot.

Mimi's chocolates utilize many local ingredients, like the truffle in the photo, it has Humming Bird Tea in it!

This tea is from the Light of Day in Leelanau, Mi. She has truffles that use local honey and jams. Mimi even uses flowers and herbs from her garden to incorporate into her confections. If you want to know more,Janice Binkert has written an excellent article that my photos accompany in the current summer issue.

I want to give a big thank you to Miriam, Cile, and Mimi for making it such an easy shoot and Mimi for the yummy chocolates.

Rhubarb Pie

Today I made an old favorite. Rhubarb pie. It came out to tangy for the family, but I loved it !

First I bought some at a roadside stand. ( I have not been successful at growing it myself)

Here is the pie about to go in.

Then after fiddling over and over with my dying oven this beauty emerged.

Getting Healthier

I am starting to take the time to pay better attention to what I eat these days...
Today I wanted something that would fuel me after my workout. Not only was this tasty but it did the trick for my metabolism. No shakes for me! ( I am a touch hypoglycemic)

It was so lovely that I just had to photograph it :)

This past week was my Spring Break from college classes. While I did not travel I did get to play with a very beautiful and brave girl named Erin. We only had a small window of time to shoot but she was a trooper!

I thought I would show how I took this simple photo of this yummy tea my brother bought me for Christmas..

I had a great spot of natural light in my living room. I brought the props over to the couch...

The only adjustment I had to make was screening the light..it was a little too intense.

I used my Nikon D300 with the 50 1.8 lens.

This was all done in just a couple minutes.

Then I enjoyed the tea!

Alexis and David got married at the grand and beautiful Bay Harbor Yacht Club in Bay Harbor, Michigan.

Jessi's Senior Session

Guess What! I had a last minute Senior session with the amazing Jessi.

I had a great time getting to know her while I worked.

She mentioned that she was going to miss being the music conductor for marching band and how she is looking into MSU for college.

I had the privilege August 7th, 2010 of photographing Alaina Hurd and Colby McVey promising to share their lives together.

Alaina was so relaxed and couldn't wait for the day to start and I don't blame her! Colby is such a great guy and all the planning that Alaina and he had done was leading up to a great celebration of their love!

Alaina and a friend worked on all the programs and little details at the wedding

and had so much fun they might do it as a side business!

I really loved spending the day with this couple.It was a beautiful wedding held at the Peninsula Room at Bower's Harbor Inn.

The flowers were by the Flower Station in Traverse City.

After the ceremony the couple threw a fantastic party!

The cake was Carrot Cake from Smith's Cakes

Yum!

Everyone had tickets for a fun "Photo Booth" experience that my awesome friend Jessica Fox photographed.

Krissie and Levi get Married!!

Back in February I had a conversation with my good friend Krissie Twomey. She was looking for someone to photograph her wedding and would I do it?

How exciting! She was engaged to Levi Britton, who is a fantastic musician and singer here in Northern , Mi. Just so happens that he is a terrific friend as well!

The day arrived on July 17 and it was just amazing. The guests enjoyed live music, cheered the bride and groom and many tears of joy were shed.

Thank you Krissie and Levi for sharing all your love and silliness with me.

Stephanie and Jim's Intimate Wedding in Northern Michigan

I had the wonderful privilege of photographing Stephanie and Jim's intimate wedding.

The guests in attendance were myself, and the officiants babysitter, with little Oscar in tow.

Stephanie arranged for the gorgeous location, on Traverse City's beautiful Oleson nature trail.

Jim and Stephanie shared poems with each other and said their vows.

I will never forget their wedding; not only for their kindness but because I got to be a witness on the marriage license!

Congratulations Stephanie and Jim and thank you for having me be a part of your special day.

Last month I was so honored and excited to photograph one of Traverse City's newest restaurants, "Soul Hole," located at 408 S. Union St.

Ralph Humes, the owner, was so very kind and helpful and the food that he and his team creates is just divine! Soul food that satisfies.

Last week I was privileged to photograph the teachers at Yen Yoga. I got the best yoga photos in my opinion.

Michigan Leagacy Art Park

Late last Fall my family and I headed to Crystal Mountain to visit the Michigan Legacy Art Park. The sculptures there are so stunning in their simplicity and impact.
It was a great day of exploration and leaf crunching!
I hope to visit again soon as I imagine the woods with trillium makes the sculptures even more unique.

I love working for Charlie and Barb of Edible Grande Traverse Magazine.
They are kind, funny, and always have great ideas. Their magazine has given me a place to explore food and drink in the region and I am blessed to be a part.
I mean, how can you not enjoy wine and cheese? This time I got to do exactly that!
We were at the fantastic Black Star Tasting Room at the Mercado in Traverse City, Mi.

If you have a chance go and experience the wonderful atmosphere and food. I loved it.

Northern Michigan Small Farm Conference 2010

So...I was asked by my friends at Edible Grande Traverse to go to the Northern Michigan Small Farm Conference this year.
To be honest I did not know it even existed but it was a far more exciting time than I expected. I was able to meet several hundred people at the EGT booth and I got to chat with many people on current small farm issues.

I really had a great time and learned a lot!

I have been away far too long from my blog! I can't believe how busy I have been but I am so grateful for the challenges.
I am going to get back on track with my entries..First up, a really fun model workshop that was put on through the Traverse Area Camera Club. I decided to pop in and see what it was about.

I had the fabulous opportunity to attend the "Toast of the Season" winery tasting event last weekend.
I highly recommend our Michigan wineries! The Leelanau Penninsula Vintner's Association puts on great weekend events. The next one is coming up February 6 and 7th,"Taste the Passion" Wine Chocoalte and Love.Mark your calenders!!

Summer Weddings 2009

My Summer Vacation...was non existent! but in a good way :>) I had the privilege of working with some of my photographic Heroes! I'd like to share a couple photos from my adventures...
First up is the gorgeous couple Alicia & Carey. They shared a love of travel and family and their wedding was just stunning. I worked with the ultra fab and fun Melisa Mckolay who is now a wonderful friend on top of being great to work with.

Then I was able to spend two weekends with Jen Kroll who is a mentor to me .
Jen taught me a lot on Marissa and Jonathan's reception. Marissa and Jonathan were all about making sure their family and friends enjoyed themselves and they were so much fun :>)

After that fantastic party Jen had me help at the amazing wedding of Jung & Zach!

Zach & Jung shared so much love on their big day. Jung was a superstar fashion model and Zach was ready for anything with his groomsmen.

Last but certainly not least I had the pleasure of working with Chandra Demers-Wheeler. Amazing lady that she is she was helping coordinate, photograph and be an active bridesmaid in Matt and Jessie's outstanding wedding.
Matt and Jessie were so in love to be sure. Their smiles and kisses were delightful.
Chandra was busy but took time to make sure I was comfy and having fun.

I had so much fun working with these amazing couples and the fantastic photographers that they had capturing their special days.
I am still shooting my own weddings too so think of me if you know anyone in need of a photographer :>)

Day of Caring 2009

On September 10th, 2009 the United Way hosted a "Day of Caring". Here in Traverse City, Mi. the community was/is encouraged to volunteer for the day and maybe help with groups they never have worked with before.
There was/is a long list of opportunities like painting, fall clean up, food drives, school supplies being collected, etc. all things that are easy to do and a great introduction into the world of volunteering.
I was able to help out by photographing the morning gathering of the groups. It was a beautiful event and a great start to the "Day of Caring".
